about

this is the third of a series of seven releases based upon thomas of cantimpre's life of christine the astonishing.

the title comes from a medieval carol i first came across in power's 'medieval women' (Cambridge University Press, 1975) which posits that women are full of deceit and violence and translates (roughly) as 'the opposite is true.'

the oppositions between christine's position as a powerful and holy woman in the medieval period and the contemporary attempts to diagnose her in her absence with schizophrenia and/ or epilepsy is the main thrust of these albums: cuidus contrarium verum est

in creating this work i used elizabeth spearling's translation from 'Medieval Writings on Female Sexuality' (Penguin, 2002.)

in addition i used works by Barbara Newman and Eileen Power as well as dipping into Foucault's 'Madness and Civilisation.'
