about

when i was a child i was barely brought up in scotland; my family and the community we belonged to held onto their irish catholic roots as a bulwark against the systems of oppression that had brought their own grand parents from ireland in the first place.

the debate happening just now in scotland about the definition of what being scottish is does not recognise the experience of immigrants and migrant workers who's children are born and brought up in scotland but at one remove from their home nation and, as such, is inherently racist and xenophobic.

i can not (nor would i wish to) speak for other communities in scotland (travellers, the roma, asian-scotish, scottish jewish people) but i can speak for the community i was brought up in.

this is my contribution to (and problematisation) of the debate about nationhood.
