about

this album was suggested by reading 'the flower of paradise' by david j. rothenberg

the first track is based upon the plain song ave maris stella and the later 'hail queen of heaven, the ocean star' by John Lingard (1771–1851) which was a part of my own upbringing and training in the local choir.

the third track is based on a 13th century anthon (first vespers, parBN Lat. 15182, fol. 304)

the use of discord throughout the three pieces owes much to marina warner's 'alone of all her sex: the myth and cult of the virgin mary' which discusses the use of the image of mary and the marian cult as a way of instilling behavioural patterns in catholic girls.

the cover image is of agnes sorel represented as the enthroned virgin by jean fouquet (c. 1450)
