about

in his classic album 'the new possibility' john fahey references the work of the theologian paul tillich and the idea of reawakening 'the new possibility' opend up by the story of christ's birth in luke's gospel: 'The birth of this New Possibility,' he writes, 'has nothing to do with Christmas trees, presents, Santa Claus, and little to do with superstitious thoughts regarding virgin births, astrologers, bodily ascensions of virgins, etc. The New Possibility is rather the gift of reconciliation between God and man. He is for all men at all times and places.'

this strikes me whenever i hear over the top renditions of the carol 'in the bleak midwinter' (words by christinia rossetti) which is about the transformative and redemptive power of giving, of forsaking that which we have for others and the importance of even the smallest, lest ostentatious gift.

this album seeks to reclaim the spiritual importance of the act of giving (either gifts or one's whole self) to others from the commercialisation of this most important and human of acts.

in a way this is a secular realisation of fahey's 'new possibility' - not of a connection with go but with each other.

give because in giving we grow and, as fahey said in the sleeve notes to the new possibility 'Nevertheless, let us do celebrate and rejoice (in proper fashion) the New Possibility; and let us do so with music among other things.'
